Overview:
As the world comes together for the sixty-ninth session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW69), to be held from 10-21 March 2025 at United Nations Headquarters, New York, to discuss gender equality and women’s empowerment, it is imperative to address the multifaceted issue of food insecurity affecting Nigerian women. This side event will serve as a platform for stakeholders, including government representatives, NGOs, community leaders, and women’s rights advocates, to discuss the challenges posed by food insecurity and to collaboratively explore effective strategies and solutions that can be implemented to support Nigerian women.
Food insecurity remains a critical challenge in Nigeria, disproportionately affecting women and girls. Recent studies indicate that approximately 33% of the Nigerian population faces food insecurity, with women being the most vulnerable due to socio-cultural barriers, economic constraints, and limited access to resources. This situation exacerbates their exposure to various vices, including gender-based violence, human trafficking, and exploitation, ultimately hindering their socioeconomic empowerment and development.
The Empowering Women Conference 2025 is an exclusive event that will provide an opportunity for stakeholders, including government representatives, NGOs, community leaders, and women’s rights advocates, to discuss the challenges posed by food insecurity among Nigerian women, strengthened partnerships among organizations working towards food security and women’s empowerment and enhanced visibility of the challenges faced by Nigerian women at an international stage.
Over one day, participants will address the multifaceted issue of food insecurity affecting Nigerian women. By joining the conference attendees will:
- Gain an overview of the current state of food insecurity in Nigeria and its unique impact on women.
- Discuss the link between food insecurity and increased vulnerability to vices among Nigerian women.
- Explore successful interventions and programs that have addressed food insecurity and empowered women within Nigerian communities.
- Identify the roles of various stakeholders, including governments, NGOs, and community organizations, in tackling food insecurity and supporting women.
Join us for an engaging day designed to spotlight the pressing issue of food insecurity among Nigerian women and mobilize collective efforts to formulate effective strategies and solutions. By addressing this critical challenge, we can empower Nigerian women, enhance their resilience, and promote gender equality in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
